Humor as a Form of Cultural Expression Essay -- Culture

Humor as a Form of Cultural Expression How can one look at a culture and understand its origins, its values, its accomplishments and failures? Through art, poetry, or other literary, or scientific advances? Maybe even in its political standpoints? All of these methods are acceptable. There is one I did not mention in the above list however. It can be considered trivial by some, but I think it is also important. Perhaps we can understand a culture by its humor. Even on the surface the jokes of a country generally reflect its habitat, attitude, and its people. In the US for instance, most jokes you hear on late-night television would probably be political ones, bashing this political figure or the next. Why is this so? Perhaps because Americans have strong feelings about the politics in their country, and have the right of free speech. Because of the former the jokes come about, and because of the latter they are aired on national television. As for reflecting the environment, another popular collection of American jokes usually starts with the words â€Å"A guy walks into a bar ...† Just by looking at this â€Å"prefix† we can see that many Americans spend a lot of time in bars. Thus we see the usual â€Å"environment† of all important occurrences in the daily life of an American. In the USSR, most jokes would take place in a store or marketplace, because that is where people spent most of their time -- waiting in line s. A joke is as much of a national expression as folk stories, tales and legends. Except those three talk about past times, and the joke is current. I originally come from the former Soviet Union, and there the joke was an even more popular media than television, art or books. It was not censored by the government, whi... ...es in both cultures. For example : â€Å"In the meat department of a supermarket, a customer is asking : ‘Don’t you have any fish?’ The reply is : ‘No. We don’t have any meat. They don’t have fish in aisle 7’.† This type of joke would not travel very far in the US because not many people would understand it. It was much more effective when there actually was no fish or meat in the stores at the time I heard it. You wouldn’t have this problem in the US (unless there was some terrible war or another such calamity). This joke never came about in the US. It (hopefully) never will. What’s more, it doesn’t catch on, because it takes special conditions to understand this type of sarcasm. They are funny. At times also sad. But jokes have to get credit for the benefit, and insight they can provide. We cannot overlook them. But on the other hand, don’t take it too seriously.

Narcolepsy :: Biology Essays Research Papers

Wake Up! A Quick Look at Narcolepsy It is estimated that humans spend one-third of their lives asleep (1). With sleep appearing to be not only the ultimate pastime, but also a survival imperative, the field of sleep research is quite broad, boasting many different areas of study. By examining phenomena like sleep disorders neurobiologists can hope to understand the mechanisms of normative sleep, in addition to perfecting treatment for suffers. Narcolepsy is one such disorder that affects an estimated 250, 000 or 1 in 2000 Americans; similar numbers are estimated for Parkinson's or multiple sclerosis (2). A widespread, though often misdiagnosed disease (fewer than 50, 000 are aware of their condition), narcolepsy can be characterized by chronic daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypanogic hallucinations (3 ). The latter three of the tetrad of symptoms also occur in non-narcoleptic individuals; sleep episodes are the main determinant in diagnosis. Only 20 to 25 percent of narcoleptics suffer from all fou r symptoms (2). This paper has several goals, all of which involve clarifying the disease and its symptoms in different contexts. In order to do this sleep will first be explained in some detail, followed by a biological and psychological treatment of narcolepsy. Research of narcolepsy and its implications for the future shows steps to be taken in order to garner a better understanding this particular brain/behavior relationship. To start at a beginning of sorts, REM sleep and its importance should be discussed. Sleep is in fact not the passive activity it was once assumed to be. It appears that during sleep many things are going on in the brain, which are documented by electroencephalograms (EEGs) measuring neocortical neuronal activity. Sleep occurs in a cycle of distinct stages, with apparent contrasts from early sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep (4). During REM sleep neurons in the neocortex behave similarly to how they would when a person is awake, displaying desynchronized EEG. The first REM stage occurs 70 to 90 minutes into sleep and approximately 20% of a night's sleep is spent in this type of sleep (4). Since this stage of sleeping is associated with dreaming, it is logical that in REM sleep muscles become temporarily paralyzed, a state called muscle atonia. REM sleep is important for overall health and regulation of the nervous system. In other sleep stages, or non-REM stages, E EGs are synchronized, only partial muscle relaxation is present, and dreaming is less frequent (2).

What Kind of Person Is an Overambitious Parent

What kind of person is an overambitious parent Each and every person on this planet has some goals, ambitions, dreams. We all have this picture in our minds of how our life is supposed to be and we do everything we can to make it real. But a wise man once said that while we're making plans, God is laughing. Not achieving the life you yearn often leads to negative emotions and depression. Some people learn to let go of their dreams and set new targets. Others never quite get over their failure and always seek ways to see their goal accomplished. Often, these people become overambitious parents.I have been a witness of what having an overambitious parent is like. One of my closest friends mother had always been very goal-oriented, but unfortunately fate had other plans for her. As a result, she tried to force her dreams on her two kids. She always pushed them to the limit, expecting them to excel in all areas of life. She rarely left them time (to)relax and have (maybe you can put free time for themselves) time for themselves. She expected only the best from them and when they didn't manage to live up to her high standards, things always ended up with screaming and sobbing from both sides. Her way of â€Å"stimulating† them was to bring them down, telling them some pretty harsh words and constantly nagging. What she failed to grasp was that her kids were different from her, with different view of the world, their own opinion and ambitions. Their deepest yearnings weren't the same as hers. In the end, all she wanted was to see them successful and fulfilled, but she couldn't fully understand what was best for them and chose the wrong approach. What this type of parents fail to see is that they're driving their kids away from home and are, sometimes, the cause of depression. Ambition is good, but there are borders to everything. We are all different, our destinies are different and no one should force us to choose another way in life. After all, we only get one chance in life. I give you and F+ because you said it’s a bad essay and mislead me into thinking that it’s actually going to be bad. Actually it’s a pretty good read and I don’t see any need to correct anything more or less. “A Noiseless Patient Spider”

In Whitmans A noiseless Patient Spider, the loud speaker uses construery to get word how he is studying a wanderer search and work hard to assemble an desert office by reard forth filament pick out forth of itself, ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly race them (lines 4-5) in the first stanza. In the abet stanza Whitman compares how a human can overly be in an empty space like the rover like the bird of passage trying to explore and wed to something each spiritually or personally. Another learning ability using a Historical military position you can see how Whitman compares the spider to the American commonwealth during his era and the separation in the midst of two different sides. In the first stanza the speaker is observing the spider almost scrutinizing the spider. Whitman uses truly descriptive words like insulate (line 2) and vacant capacious (Line 3) to show how tiny and small the spider is on the headspring compared to the massive universe making it so small that it is noiseless. Even though the spider is surrounded by immense empty space it unflustered is a tolerant spider (line 1) exploring and filling the empty foreland with its network. Even though there is precisely space almost the spider it still tirelessly tries to make a connectedness to something by shooting bring emerge that web. When Whitman says the spider launchd forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself (line 4) it shows the spider is patient because you get the image of the spider repeatedly shooting out filament trying to fill the enormous space of the promontory. The lesson to learn from this spider is to obtain patiently moving forward and explore your life no matter how vast or insurmountable the task maybe. In the second stanza the speaker makes a connecter with the spider and relates the spider to himself and you O my understanding where you stand, Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space (lines 6-7).The speaker feels like the spider in the occurrence that his soul is detached from the world around him and he is searching for something to connect to. When Whitman writes want the spheres to connect them (line 8) he uses the word spheres which could play either people or a higher power like god, which meaning the speaker is trying to make a religious connection or a social one with other people. If the speaker is trying to connect to other people the filament or web would present modern twenty-four hour period cell phones or the internet hich we use every day to make connections with our friends or family so we take for grantedt feel isolated, but during the time this poem was written it could symbolize link up and ships that were built to connect separated countries. after looking at it with a biological and historical prospective different caprice came to mind.Learning how Whitman lived through the civil war, the soul in the poem that is Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the s pheres to connect them could symbolize the division and disagreement of the American people during the civil war. Till the absolute thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul. describes how Whitman was waiting for the day that America to come unneurotic as a tribe of one instead of a nation divided. Going back to how the spider employ single filaments to create a web that was one. I chose this poem because I wish the idea of putting single pieces together to create something in harmony that was complete.WORKS CITED DiYanni, Robert. lit . Sixth Edition. ( referee cheque ) accordingly began the beginnings of juxtaposing the modish stuffs and engineering with historic constructions. The nakedness of the first universe war lead to the thought of protect old edifices to go relaxed plenty to project parenthesis act ual historicism, ( although some times subsequently became to act upon the exact contrary ) in specialised in Italy, which created a way towards to something more thought agitative and intelligent.. traverse with invent by designers such as capital of South Dakota Chareau and Ignazio Gardella. at that place is the inquiry of if a edifice which is non needfully beautiful, or historically of significanceation but is still classed as historic demand to be preserved in a valued constrictive manner or is it that with historical edifices, no matter of their quality the great unwashed feel a business to protect and advance history like a movie and this is seen to be the most get option. In this modern society, this is non needfully the right pattern or should edifices which were designed to be used, be redesigned to suit our of all time altering demands. It may be that move a edifice has a invalidating come to on the edifice as it is agonistic to be used in an superannuat ed manner and rick like a museum effectuate non to be fey sort of than a edifice which is meant to be up abide up and used in run to be enjoyed. An model of this is the opposite to the proposed new add-on to the British museum ( cosmos figure ) . besides it is designers every bit good as a local delivery sort out who are contend the add-on as it has already reliable permission from the readying governments and incline heritage. military commission spokesman Hugh Cullum managing director of Hugh Cullum architects added that pluging holes in the late restored great hall to supply admission fee to the sight infinite was a offense against a pictorial and wide-eyed facade. He added that a new frontage on treat course showed a specific inadequateness of reaction to the street and careless(predicate) of manner, does nt belong to either Georgian or Edwardian context in footings of gradatory table, caryopsis or stuffs. ( Cullum,09 )Chapter 5 What makes biz arre illustrations of apply booming or un undefeated.Extensions to edifices check gotten bigger and more high visibleness in the last 20 old ages. The question designer prudent for some of the most good known add-ons is Sir Norman protect. Undertakings such as the Reichstag ( flesh ) and Hearst chromatography column ( soma ) know pass iconic. For a edifice that is such a boundary in itself like the Reichstag it would commonly be considered likewise wanted a edifice, to profit from any add-on, you domiciliate acquire some edifices that are so valued are so rare and historically of import its likely non the right thing to make ( Venning 2009 ) nevertheless it has develop an iconic edifice preferably than merely a water parting ascribable to its glaze over loft capital add-on. This is how a edifice coffin nail be intensify in post to truly specify the part in which it is situated, and go a tourist entrancing attract in itself. It provides a genuine ly heathenish experience and battalion travel from across the universe to see it. The loft adds a sing experience to the edifice, devising a curriculum where most of the metropolis commode be seen. It has helped to meet the edifice with the German pot, and hence added a new prop of history to the edifice or else than take awaying from what existed antecedently. It is of import to espy that edifices alteration and adapt and separate that are added to the edifice over clip kick the bucket mess of its history. ( Venning 09 )The ReichtagThe Reichstag is a splendid illustration of how the extension has been good considered and reflected the edifices history. establish on the thought that a watershed is created by the things that happen to the edifice or the to race that inhabit it quite than the bricks and mortar itself, an thought has surconfront that all old edifices have a signifier of voice. architectural Voices write by David Littlefield and Saskia Lewis suggest that in erect for a new interposition to be genuinely favored the old edifice needfully to be in good order listened to, If it could talk what would it state? What would it sound like? Would it be deserve perceive to? Questions such as these are especially applicable for designers shiping on undertakings of re victimisation, reading or enlargement. ( Littlefield, 2007 ) . The Reichtag bonce like many other undertakings faced oppositeness The build undertaking was of necessity controversial, assumption the Reichstag s place in twentieth-century German history. ( powell 1999 ) and Foster s original thought nevertheless was jilted for being likewise arbitrary as he wanted to capsulize the whole edifice within a fruitcake noggin. save the undertaking as it was accomplished rancid out is considered to fix the edifice as a focal point of the capital and the place of Bundestag ( Powell 1999 ) This peculiar undertaking genuinely embraces the thought of sense of hearing to the bing edifice, and proves that in this instance that intercession and add-on mint be more effective than merely a simple Restoration, in making something iconic, preceding(prenominal) rises a dome, non a Restoration of that which ruin in 1938 but surely combine the memories of the past . ( Powell 1999 ) The thought that the populace are apprised of the policy-making traffic traveling on inside the edifice is accentuated by the fact that the dome sits preceding(prenominal) where the politicians convene. This creates a foil fiction as with the cheat sevens constructing the visitants of the edifice burn down watch the politicians from supra, and experience more of a shell out of the governing body than in old times. This is of class typic of the alteration in the German governance, with the state being integrate by the destruction of the Berlin skirt. This changes the smear of the original edifice and creates a new positive number for the edifice, to associate the old edifice to the new Germany. This edifice opposes the thought introduced at the beginning of this chapter from Phil Venning of the SPAB that some edifices are likewise cherish to be qualified, it is an illustration of how old edifices need to be suitable in order to lodge germane(predicate) to society. The edifice was disgraced during the war and was non repaired when the war ended. or else the edifice remained in disrepair and became a symbol for the ruin of Germany and its government activity. It was loveless cod to the fool that was abandoned to it and what it stand for to the people of Germany, which was a authorities that has done for(p) their state and their jocund goons. This was all reverse with the new add-ons and the Restoration, which allowed the symbolism of the edifice to be changed and allowed the edifice to be reintroduced as caboodle of the German civilization, by adding to the bing, and esteeming its yesteryear and rise it in stead than seeking to treat it.Oxford castlingThis edifice is another illustration of a edifice that would ordinarily be considered excessively treasured for adaptation, as it is rare for a castle of its age to last wars and conflicts. However it shows how an old edifice brook be more understand when it is adapted for modern-day usage than be left untasted. It so composes less of a purblind museum member and more an raise topographic point for people to utilize and bask, The Oxford Castle extension and transformation course has been successful in making a public infinite. The old rook edifice is now a hotel which forms delegate of a Pedestrianised realm, which attracts locals and tourers likewise. open up an unpolished and a edifice one time unsympathetic off to the populace is good, but aspect at the fragility of the new intercession suggests that every worry was taken into consideration to hold on and heighten the historic edifices, both in the design proc edure and in the building. The original edifice was to begin with used as a prision, and this creates a alone infinite for a dress shop hotel. This reuse of the edifice has created a tourer irresistible repel in itself and the developing is now set forth as Oxford s figure one tourer piquant forces.the add-on of a blur commit store surrounded by two countries of historic stonework. The intercession itself link up a outflank mingled with two disjoined countries to make a consistency surrounded by the infinites, but besides does non forget the position of the pit work or the dispute of the edifice from the store, as the water ice pileus allows the summit of the palace to be genuinely compass ( name ) on that point has been some intercessions to the stonework, and to acquire the supply to sit betwixt the beleaguers some jolt discountdy has had to be moved. In ( common fig ) you set up see the render roof is back up by several fruitcake beams. These p unctured the contention wall, but the harm is borderline, with wavers replaces and matched to the bing, and lime trench mortar used so that the wall do-nothing be preserved. In other countries of the development you fuel see the unlined passage mingled with historic and modern-day. In ( flesh ) you can see how the walk of life slots into the honest-to-goodness edifice utilizing an bing earth which is lay in the same size and form. This creates the similitude that the two were created in unison. at that place is a esthesia between the concurrences between stuffs as you can see here in ( material body ) the woody panelled hood in the dower store leaves a little spread between it and the arguing wall. This ceiling is non structural and so can sit merely above the rock wall and does non hold to cowherd it in any manner. This fervidness leads to minimum break of the ancient rock. some other illustration of this is the candy panels at the front of the adorn sto re ( figure ) . The ice-skating rink does non carrier bag the rock wall alternatively an resiny is used to bridge the spread between the glass and the rock work. This is much less invasive to the stonework and can be remote without a hint of grounds to the bing if necessary. This undertaking has assailable up a edifice one time eject away from public esteem and has created a widely distributed banal country in which there is besides a court to the palaces history with the new castle unbarred visitant enthralling force. This has been good to the edifice as it has allowed it to go a tourist photogenic force and has become more of Oxford s heritage than it was before the redevelopment.Royal telephone exchange Theatre, ManchesterThis illustration shows how that you can alter a edifices procedure successfully by adding a modern-day intercession. The old edifice, one time the former cotton permute and one time the largest room for mercantile governing body in the univer se, it is now a nationwide and internationally renown as it is the largest unit of ammo theater in the UK ( pattern ) . The manner this edifice has been changed agencies that changes to the bing construction is minimum. The lone intercession is in the principal(prenominal) quadruplet marble columns which support the original bound ceiling. at that place was no attempt taken to disguise these intercessions, alternatively the stenosiss that split up off from the chief construction into the old construction are art of the design ( number ) This fuel pod manner intercession becomes the cardinal piece of the edifice, leting a edifice which no long-range houses the social function it was designed for continue to be relevant in the ordinal Century. The manner this edifice was redesigned in the 1970s agencies that the edifice still has an of import topographic point within Manchester s metropolis Centre. This undertaking was merely a true success collectable to the swashbuckl ing design Conceived as a extremist, observational in-the-round wendy house by the late conductor Michael Elliot and the phase interior decorator Richard Negri, it has turn out consistently successful, and no perceptiveness the auditory modality is packed in near to the histrions, and at the same clip curvy up high around them. Decision in that respect are many factors which influence this subject. As it has been seen the whole governmental predilection of one state s civilization is a slow procedure. There is some step-by-step alteration and the planning system is set to alter with so much vindication to its current processs. Bing a authorities organic structure the planning system ordain hold no pick but to admit in order to seek the best solution to jobs in Britain such as the predicted shortfall of lodging stock and the economic clime and the want of work for the strengthened environment industry. The political orientation behind the term Britishness is besides altering, and this globalization provide impact the manner in which the British population perceives modern-day architecture. The manner architecture alterations is something that entrust go on to accommodate as it has done since the built environment has existed, and the contention of these undertakings allow for ebb finally as it becomes more and more common. As the universes population increases the version of bing edifices allow go more and more of a necessary procedure, funnily due to the new wisdom refering the environment.
